Earlier in the year my husband and I agreed that we would be celebrating our birthday’s as a family with fun adventures to local theme parks. Our days (or nights?) of partying are long behind us so what better way to celebrate than to get out and watch our kids have a blast?
My birthday was last weekend and we decided to take a trip out to Gilroy. Our plan was to spend Saturday at Gilroy Gardens where we would meet up with my mom, sister and aunt and then stay the night and enjoy the next day, my actual birthday, shopping (my favorite pass time!!) at the Gilroy Outlets.
Gilroy Gardens is a family theme park that is geared more toward the younger crowd… my 15 year old was a bit bored at times but he also was walking around with a broken collarbone so I’m sure that didn’t help. They do have a water park that looks pretty awesome but it wasn’t open during our trip so we might have to go back sometime this summer just to check that out.
Isabella and her cousins had a blast walking around trying out each ride. The adults even joined them on a few as well!
I think its pretty safe to say that the two favorite park rides for us adults were the train ride and the swan/duck paddle boats. Everything else in the park is basically related to spinning and we all know that as you get older that dizzy feeling is not as much fun as it use to be. haha!
Gilroy Gardens is not just filled with fun rides for kids. It is in fact a large park filled with beautiful gardens of flowers as well as some pretty interesting trees to look at. We loved this tree that was designed as an arch entryway in the park. I’m pretty sure every park visitor stopped here to take a photo!
There are also plenty of shaded areas and benches to take snack breaks or just to hang out.
(This is just a silly picture that I just had to get because I saw the opportunity. Gio did not actually eat the corn…)
He did tear into that banana though!!
Unfortunately these pretty gardens were not so great for my allergies. About halfway through our day they really started acting up and just got worse as the day went on. By the time we got to the hotel I was just a big mess. Isabella seemed to be suffering as well and we barely got any sleep that night, though she did manage to sleep in a bit in the morning…
Instead of waking up and heading off to the outlets, we woke up and drove to urgent care. Turns out I had developed a sinus infection and it was bad. I was miserable. We canceled our planned dinner and cake with family, drove home and I literally passed out on the couch. Not exactly the way I had planned to spend my birthday, but lets face it, it could have been worse.
I do have to give a big shout out to my hubby. Although our trip did not go as planned, he still gets points for effort. He also took good care of me and helped out a lot with the kids so that I could get much need rest.
Best hubby, ever!
Let’s just hope that we are all feeling well enough to enjoy celebrating his birthday at Disneyland next month!! Yes, Disneyland is not exactly “local” but it turns out that we will be at a wedding that very weekend that happens to be halfway to Disney so we said, why not?
I’d love to hear about any exciting ways that you have celebrated your birthday as a family in the comments below! Its never too late to start planning for next year! 🙂
