Working from home with kids, I’ve never really had a designated work space. I use a laptop and move freely from one room to another, usually dictated by where my kids want to play. Now that my children are going to be starting school soon, I decided it was the perfect time to create a small home office for myself. Somewhere I could be comfortable and have the space I need to stay organized.
But where to setup such a space?
I could have easily taken over my kids play room, but truth be told, I actually kind of love that they have their own space to play downstairs. I also could have taken over my husband’s desk in our small loft area, though he does tend to use it from time to time still, so where would he go?
I finally decided I would take over the small corner space in our master bedroom that was home to an abandoned elliptical. Although it was a small space, I saw the potential and made it my goal to create a comfy yet chic home office.
Once I had the muscle in the house (aka my husband and teenager) move the abandoned elliptical out of this space, I measured everything. I already had my eye on this 48″ Desk in White and was so happy that it fit perfectly in my space! The next item on my list was something functional for storage, but small enough to fit between my desk and the wall. Luckily, I already had this utility cart on hand. Its big enough to carry everything I need, including these pretty floral accordion file folders. I try to stay as paperless as possible, so for now at least, this works really well for me!
Above my desk, I have a very tall wall that was looking awfully plain, so I went out to my nearest Target and picked up these 36″ floating shelves along with this white frame and pink floral wall sculpture. Filling the shelves was easy peasy, as I already had most of the items on hand. I wish finding an office chair was just as easy. I searched for days between local stores and several websites. Finally, I took my chances on this Winslow Tufted Back Chair and I’m so happy I did! Not only did it give my office the chic look I was aiming for but its also very comfortable and fits nicely in my space.
I completed the look with this beautiful Bosphorus Moroccan Trellis rug from my friends over at Rugs USA. It is such a small space, but I still felt like it needed just one more thing to pull the look together and the rug definitely did the trick!
Do you work from home? I’d love to know if you have a designated work space!
