5 Healthy Lifestyle Changes for the Whole Family

Not too long after 2019 rang in, my husband and I decided that we were going to strive to make healthier choices, not only for ourselves, but for our family as well.  We realized we have been over indulging, and as a result, have created some unhealthy habits for our children.

Check out the five easy and healthy lifestyle changes that we have made together as a family!

Reduce Refined Sugars

I admit it, our whole family could stand to reduce our daily consumption of refined sugars.  I have a terrible sweet tooth and I’m afraid I haven’t shown a great example to my children.  My husband and I realized that to be fun parents, did not meant that we had to continue our weekend traditions at the donut shop.  It was definitely time to scale back and make better nutrition decisions.  This does not mean we will never visit our local donut shop again, but perhaps we will make the trip once a month instead of once a week.

Snack SmartInstead of reaching for a fruit snack or granola bar, we have encouraged our children to make a healthier snack decision.  This would be anything from fresh fruit or vegetables to their favorite cup of FAGE Total Split Cups.  These are personally my favorite on the go snacks to reach for.  I feel as though satisfy my sweet tooth without the consequences of eating a handful of cookies.  Not only do they contain 30% less sugar, but they are made from all natural ingredients, protein-rich and come in a variety of fruit flavors! My personal favorite flavor is the 2% Strawberry while my kids prefer the 2% Mixed Berry and my husband loves the 2% Peach.

Encourage Physical Activity

It’s widely known that both adults and children are recommended to get moving for at least 20-30 minutes a day.  While my children do a great job in this area, my husband and I have failed miserably.  It’s too easy to get lost in work and other day to day obligations.  We are determined to make changes this year to be our best healthiest versions of ourselves!

Limit the Screen Time

I use to swear my children would never be glued to the TV but as you can guess, they get a little more screen time than I would like to admit.  I do have to say that we are pretty good about getting out and finding alternative activities, but there are just some days I’m beat – or I’m swamped with work.  On those days it’s so easy to allow them to get lost in their favorite show.  I’m really hoping this year to find a better balance for all of us in this aspect. So far this year we have been off to a mostly good start, but of course, we still get off track now and again.

Lead by Example

Our children our watching us!  If they see you reaching for an unhealthy snack and NEVER see you making healthy choices, they are bound to follow in your footsteps.
